In the mid Nineteenth Century, in a German hamlet, a very young boy Joseph exhibits an empathy for horses, which borders on Genius. His father who breeds and trains horses for an elite Hussar regiment recognizes and encourages his son’s gift. Jakob’s skill with horses makes him the hussars mascot and a favorite of General, Count Von Falkenbrecht who commands the regiment. It amuses Von Falkenbrecht to take this peasant boy under his tutelage to become a gentleman.

There is however, a problem. Joseph Gershomsohn is
Jewish.

In exchange for his secret techniques with horses,
Joseph Gershomsohn becomes Franz Joseph Von Hufberg Baron Von Breitenstein.

But it is the Jewish peasant Joseph Gershomshon; to save a Jew being brutalized by an officer of the Royal Wittelsbach Hussars, intervenes. In a duel on horseback the officer is disarmed and humiliated becoming a life long enemy. Because of the duel, Joseph is forced to flee to America, where he continues his false identity Franz-Joseph Von Hufberg Baron Von Breitenstein in certain circumstances, which bring him into the fiercest fighting in the Civil War.

But it is as Joseph Gershomson that he falls in love with a Jewish Heiress. The adventure carries Joseph from the carnage of Cold Mountain to the decadence of the court of Louis Napoleon in Paris.

The Good American eBook Ted Flicker

While the story line was complicated, and took some time to develop. I was drawn in, both by the young Jewish man's struggle to understand himself in relation to his concept of God, and the supporting drama of his relationship with horses in general, but more especially with one particular horse. It was not an easy read, but well worth the effort. the descriptive passages were both colorful and commanding. The passage where the young man saves a rabbi with whom he disagrees and dislikes catapults Joseph into the adventure that is the backbone of this story. I recommend this book because the initial struggle to find my way into the plot was richly rewarded.

The Good American eBook Ted Flicker Reviews

Could not it it down...beautiful writing, a gripping story, well thought out and a tricky plot line! This was a delicious page turner that I read until deep into the night, because I could not bear to put it down. I recommend it highly!
I read this book last year and couldn't put it down. It's historical fiction and adventure combined and moves interestingly and continuously from beginning to end. I even learned a bit of history about American railroads.
This is an excellent read! The development of characters and period-correctness is wonderful. The historical events are true and accurate while the authors characters play in between the facts. Every chapter leads to an interesting and exciting point where it is very difficult to stop without reading ahead what comes next. The story must have some parallels with the life of the author to bring such vivid color and detail to the mind of the reader. The several plots twist together in a wonderful way so as not to trample one another nor leave the notion that the thread isn't continuous with another, not-yet-explained way.

The plot begins of a young man of peasant parents in Europe. His charm and abilities lead him to rub elbows with aristocracy and his audacity further leads him to uncommon leadership that is revered by some and damned by others. He flees from his enemies to America where the freedoms of the New World envelope the young man. His personality and talents lead him through adventures and bountiful success in New York. Throughout the novel, introspectives play a critical role in helping the reader to appreciate the characters in the context of the accurate portrayal of the period.

Loved the book. Recommend it highly.
This is a fascinating book, rich in period detail and philosophical passion, steeped in history, and pulling you forward with an absorbing, page-turning plot.
I bought this book when it was first published as an internet book back in 1997. There was no other availability. I loaned it to all my friends, then found some used copies from various sellers on six or seven years ago and bought them all, giving them to new friends who love to read. I am absolutely delighted to find that this book has not disappeared forever . . . and it can now live inside my alongside my dogeared paper copy!

The author has an amazing way with words, does a magnificent job of character development, and doesn't neglect a darn good storyline, either. Deftly weaving fact with fiction, he creates a hero whose immigrant and Civil War experiences somehow generate a vast love for his new country.

Read it. Love it. Share it. It belongs on a bestseller list!
